MY STORY
Hi, I'm Julie Novotny, founder of Digital Mentor Network.

I help people, carers and community organisations build confidence with technology through patient, practical and friendly support.

Whether it's using a smartphone, tablet, computer, or online services, my approach is patient, practical, and step-by-step, with no jargon and no pressure.

I believe technology should help people feel connected, independent and confident—not overwhelmed.

Why I Started Digital Mentor Network
Digital Mentor Network began with a simple realisation.

My interest in technology started many years ago, but it wasn't until I helped my own mother set up their first smartphone that I realised how much of a difference the right support can make. I saw the frustration of buttons that didn't seem to do anything, the fear of "breaking" the internet, and the lack of patient, practical guidance available to older Australians.
That experience sparked a passion that has shaped the last decade of my work.
Â
Before founding Digital Mentor Network, I spent more than 17 years running a successful photography business in Sydney. Through that experience, I developed strong skills in technology, digital systems, customer service, and business management.
Â
After relocating to the Sapphire Coast in 2013, I became actively involved in local businesses, community organisations and volunteer programmes. It was through this work that I saw firsthand how many people were being left behind as everyday services, communication and information moved online.
I realised that many people didn't need more technology—they simply needed someone patient to help them understand and use technology with confidence.

I continued building my skills through business development programmes and national digital inclusion initiatives, working alongside libraries, carers and community organisations to help more people build confidence with technology.

I later established and managed a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving digital literacy through workshops, mentoring and community programs, helping people stay connected, informed and independent.

What I enjoy most is seeing that "aha!" moment when someone realises they can do it. Whether it's making a video call to family, using online banking safely or feeling more comfortable with a smartphone or tablet, those moments of confidence are what this work is all about.
