I’m Julie Novotny, founder of Digital Mentor Network.

I believe technology should bring people together, not leave them behind. After supporting hundreds of older Australians to gain confidence with technology, I created Digital Mentor Network to provide friendly, practical support that helps people stay connected, independent, and safe in today's digital world.

Why I Founded Digital Mentor Network
My interest in technology started many years ago, but it wasn't until I helped my own mother set up her first smartphone that I truly understood how much difference the right support could make. I saw the frustration, the fear of "breaking" something, and the lack of patient, practical guidance available to older Australians. That moment changed the direction of my work.
I've always been curious about how things work, especially technology. I enjoy exploring new devices and software, figuring things out and then showing others how simple they can be. Over the years, I realised that many people didn't need more technology—they simply needed someone patient to explain it in a way that made sense.

After 17 successful years running my own photography business in Sydney, I retired to the Sapphire Coast in 2013, expecting to slow down and enjoy a quieter lifestyle. Instead, I found myself becoming increasingly involved with local businesses, networking groups, and community organisations.
​
Before long, I was helping people navigate technology, build their online presence, and connect more confidently in an increasingly digital world.

That unexpected journey eventually led me to specialise in digital support for older Australians—a path that continues today through Digital Mentor Network.

I continued building my skills through business development programs and national digital inclusion initiatives, working alongside libraries, carers, and community organisations to help more people build confidence with technology.
​
I later established and managed a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving digital literacy through workshops, mentoring, and community programs, helping people stay connected, informed, and independent.
​
The most rewarding part of my work is seeing someone realise they really can do it. Whether it's making their first video call, learning to bank online safely, organising treasured family photos, or simply feeling confident using a smartphone or tablet, those moments of confidence are why I love what I do.
